On solar energy:
The energy from sunlight striking the earth for 40 minutes is equivalent to the global energy consumption for a whole year. So it is not 8 times but around 10,000 times. Every second, the sun sends 30 million megawatts of emission free energy to the earth.
The prospects look good for solar energy. According to a scientist whose writings I regularly read, Ray Kurzweil, solar energy is an information technology that is experiencing exponential growth. Solar energy production has doubled every year for the last 20 years and is now only 8 doublings away from providing nearly all of the world's energy needs. The implications of this trend are huge and warrant careful consideration for the environment, investments, politics, the economy and our future way of life.
