Can Nanotechnology enhance our sense of Well- Being?

Long long ago about 150,000 years ago earlier homospaiens evolved from apes.  From hunters to settled civilisation, we became agriculturists, we invented wheel and from there on there was no stopping to the science and the revolution – it has been an an exponential process. It is said the necessaity is the mother of invention. All inventions and scientific discoveries  have lead on to a better health, a better living, and who can challenge this that it has also helped people enhance their own worth through spirituality- the denying is futile to say that good health and comfort help us become healthier and a healthy body then carries healthy mind.

Where is science and technology leading us to?

To tiny robots, robots that are smaller than a tablet you take in when sick. Those robots can travel in your body like tiny ships, cleaning, correcting the damaged parts, checking,  assessing etc. Those robots will be smaller than one-billionth of a meter, smaller than the wavelength of visible light and a hundred-thousandth the width of a human hair. Those tiny robots can stimulate parts of your brain and neurons that may make you less prone to Alzheimer’s or other diseases- the imaginary possibilities are endless.

If one goggles nanotechnology one can find zillion websites that actually will list all the uses of nanotechnology- Clothing would be microorganism resistant, Anti-disease nano-machines, TV’s that use Carbon Nanotubes, molecular computers- imagine your glasses that you wear become your computer, communication one of the biggest achievement of nano-world- it is an endless list.

So I am not going into details of what nanotechnology can do! No point copy pasting things that you can read on net.

The Fears:The fears around this technology are that it has a vast potential of creating irreversible damage if fallen in wrong hands. Nanotechnology should be used, with appropriate safeguards against accident and abuse, to bring deliberate, fundamental changes in aspects of human experience previously regarded as painful but also permanent facts of life. Put another way, nanotechnologists seek to abolish the worst forms of evil and suffering from human life while removing most or all natural limits on the expansion of human freedom .And if fallen in wrong hands then that would be the end of the world

The possibility: a possibility in stimulating a part of the brain that may enhance ones own sense of well being -Tiny robots inside oneself that may be able to stimulate amygdala- a part of our brain that manages connections and responses between several regions of the brain. It's directly involved with emotional well-being, the fight-or-flight response and fear conditioning. A recent study suggests that the amygdala also plays a role in the complexity of social life. It is the part that seems to get stimulated when one meditates. Imagine if nanotechnology can initiate one’s amygdala that may not take one to the entire process of meditation that leads to awareness- at all levels but it makes the person go- into a mind state that enhances his process of expansion!

But that should not be confused with getting drugged, as sometimes drugs can enhance some state of awareness- but that had a negative impact as well

Another aspect that nanotechnology can be used in is referred to asNeuroplasticity-brain plasticity, refers to changes in neural pathways and synapses which are due to changes in behaviour, environment and neural processes, as well as changes resulting from bodily injury.

Can we change how we think, act and behave through the help of  these tiny robots. One may not have an answer at all, as there are many speculation and dogmas around science coming to the aid of experiential spirituality or enhanced awareness.

In many many years from now – nanotechnology may be the reason that this world either gets destroyed  or becomes highly evolved with people who through certain stimulations of parts of our brain can see what it is to be a holistic person, an aware person , a person who can truly say that he now understands consciousness as he has experienced it in himself- and not just read it or hear it from someone.

Let us hope so!

Hi Alks, when I read this sentence ,"Imagine if nanotechnology can initiate one’s amygdala that may not take one to the entire process of meditation that leads to awareness" .......immediate thought that came to my mind was , " Oh Great! It will bring about awareness of the true self and then may be people will drop all greed and hatred and this will bring about the change in our attitude and all will imbibe good values." ................and in the end I read your last paragraph , echoing similar sentiments. .....I think this technology is needed badly to make our world a happy world. :)))

Interesting blog ...ckk

Hi Nita
I am not sure what it may bring to us- but it can create that first step towards self awareness I am sure
and yes

Haha yes I know
it is for people who are tooo busy and have to wait till they find some time
imagine if it becomes as simple as climbing on treadmill and doing gym and then wiring something on the brain to do a brain gym LOL

Will it be like switching on/off meditation? Or will it be a constant state of meditation?

I am not sure yet!
it is just that it may be a possibility- not switched off instantly i would say- i mean one would stay in a state of enhanced bliss for some time!
but who knows!

Dear Alks,

An interesting piece. Undoubtedly science and technology have made rapid strides in facilitating better lives. But as you would appreciate, there is no "free lunch" in life. Every technological breakthrough also comes with its potential downside, whether its nuclear technology or even in contemorary times the use of mobiles and handsets. Whilst these gadgets have certainly helped break down all barriers in communication and "connected" our world, isnt it ironical that we seem to be talking more, chatting more (a lot of it in the virtual world) but bonding less !! A recent research survey carried out in the IT city of Bangalore amongst age group 25-35 years had some disturbing revelations. In a lot many cases it was found that respondents had developed frozen shoulders, cervical spondylosis, numbness in fingers. Furthermore most admitted to getting "hooked" to their respective laptops, mobiles at home after returning from work. As a consequence there was hardly any communication or intimacy between married partners. Not surprising then that many experienced unfulfilled relationships with the probability of divorces only mounting.
I am not trying to downplay the role of nanotechnology going forward. After all advances in medical sciences will certainly help increase life spans but I am not sure whether we need to wait for nanotechnology / robotic sciences for our wellness. Nature has willed it that our wellness (physical, mental and emotional) is dependent on the choices we make - by aan appropriate re-alignment of our habits, attitudes and thinking. We can be well if we learn to respect our bodies (shunning indulgences), drop our egos, decide to live in the moment (the here and now) , judge less and spread more love whilst recognising that we are being guided in Life's journey by a larger, higher Intelligence of the Universe .
I would reckon we need more Humanism and less of robotic existence. So why wait for nanotechnology for our wellness. Are we not wired enough already ?!!!!!

With current technology if people have a bad impact on life, morality, ethics, with that high level technology in the future as portrayed here, it will be catastrophic..........

Good Morning Alks.. CKKMKKC Aum Khagaya Namah

Wonderful article. Submit to the Gods of science and technology :) all resistance will be futile :)

Nanorobots : Potential applications for nanorobotics in medicine include early diagnosis and targeted drug-delivery for cancer, biomedical instrumentation, surgery, pharmacokinetics, monitoring of diabetes, and health care. (wikipedia).

Nanoneuroscience : Nanotechnology provides new methods to investigate individual neuronal compartments and to manufacture small products ranging from mimetic molecules that interact with receptors to neural prosthetics that restore function following neural degeneration.

I was really inspired to read about all these by picking the threads from your blog. Let me take a look at what scientists are doing in India in this field. I'll keep sharing the info with you on this blog.

It has rightly been said:
What human brain can conceive, it can achieve.
Nano Technology is definitely going to be The Numero-Uno, touching very aspect of life. Human mind is overworking every time, to make things finer and better. That impulse is perhaps ingrained in his mind...to achieve the zenith of his ingenuity...

But, rightly as you have observed:
"...In many many years from now – nanotechnology may be the reason that this world either gets destroyed or becomes highly evolved..."

That I think, is subtlest aspect to think about, by the harbingers of nano-technology...

Uhm...
Can a spiritual experience be reduced to techniques.?
I do not believe so.

Those nanotechniques just allow the secrete of endorphines and morphines, and as such are a great alternative to drugs and all kinds of addiction...
But to call them divine?

Great blog
Thank you
