MANILA, Philippines - Sons of mayors who had served in Parañaque City will slug it out for the city's top post today.
Incumbent Councilor Florencio Benjamin "Benjo" Bernabe III, son of outgoing Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr, will hold a motorcade at 5 pm from Bradco Avenue en route to his proclamation rally at 7 pm in Silverio Compound in Sucat, site of a bloody demolition last year blamed on his father.
He is teamed up with Rico Golez, son of incumbent 2nd District Rep Roilo Golez. Both are running under the United Nationalist Alliance.
Bernabe's rival, incumbent Parañaque 1st District Rep and former Laguna Vice Governor Edwin Olivarez, son of former Mayor Pablo Olivarez, will hold his proclamation rally at the Redemptorist Church in Baclaran at 5 pm.
Olivarez is running with incumbent Councilor Edwin Benzon under the Liberal Party-led coalition, Team PNoy. Expected senatorial candidates to attend are Cynthia Villar, Bam Aquino, Sonny Angara, Risa Hontiveros, Jun Magsaysay, Chiz Escudero, and Jamby Madrigal.
In 2010, their fathers faced off in the mayoral polls where the elder Bernabe emerged as winner.
Besides being councilor, the younger Bernabe is also vice president for operations of real estate firm BERMA Management Corp. The younger Olivarez, meanwhile, served as vice governor of Laguna from 2004 to 2007. He lost his bid for the gubernatorial post in 2007. - Rappler.com
