Solar power beats rising fuel costs

THERE is no more excuse for people who cannot afford electricity or the rising cost of fuel to stay in the dark.
A portable solar powered machine has been invented by a 66-year-old man for those living on outer islands and areas that do not have power supply.
Kitione Namakadre sold four of these machines to electrify six police community posts on Vanua Levu.
Mr Namakadre said his new invention was scientifically proven by the Department of Energy and more talks were arranged this month regarding his invention.
"This idea came to me when I was in Lebanon in 1990. I learnt this from the Palestinian people," he said. Electricity costs, Mr Namakadre said were very high and the machine was an alternative way for people to save money.
It took him a week to make one of the machines at an expense of $500. He had two types of machines — one that generated 12 volts for lights and chargers, and a 240-volt machine for televisions and radios.
He said the machines were powered by solar panels and priced at $700 for the 12-volt machine and $950 for the 240-volts machine.
He said the solar panels would be charged differently if people were interested in purchasing one.
Mr Namakadre said he started his business in January last year and was looking forward to its expansion.
