BEIJING - China on Wednesday urged for actions that promoted peace and stability in the region, ahead of joint military drills to be held by the Philippines and the U.S.
"As for Philippines and U.S. joint military drill, I have noticed this news. We hope relevant sides should take actions that are beneficial for maintaining peace and stability in the region, not the other way around," ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told media at a regular news briefing in Beijing.
Philippine newspaper, The Philippine Star, said that the naval forces from the Philippines and the U.S. will conduct joint exercises from June 27 to July 2.
The news article said the drill will be conducted in the disputed waters of Zambales near Panatag Shoal, an area claimed by the Philippines but currently controlled by China.
China's claims over islands, reefs and atolls in resource-rich waters off its south coast and to the east of mainland Southeast Asia have set it directly against Vietnam and the Philippines, while Brunei, Taiwan and Malaysia also lay claim to parts.
