The CNN 10

CNN is honoring innovation in technology by highlighting 10 young companies you'll be hearing a lot more about over the next 12 months. None are household names, but all have the potential to shake up the consumer-tech landscape, help address global problems or just make our lives easier.
Several have intriguing products ready to hit the marketplace. Others appear poised for massive growth. And some just do really cool stuff.
To select these 10, we consulted our colleagues at CNNMoney, noted which new startups were attracting money from investors and, finally, weighed which ones seemed most likely to have an impact on digital culture and the world beyond. We avoided companies that have already gotten lots of attention in favor of promising startups that have been honing their craft mostly out of the spotlight, preparing for their moment.
And we sought startups in a variety of fields, from social media to mobile dating to health care. Some are industry cult favorites, but others were birthed far from the tech-hothouse climate of Silicon Valley.
May we present our 10 startups to watch for 2013. All seem poised for bigger things. Chances are they won't all go mainstream, but we think they deserve a shot.
