China president urges dialogue to resolve S. China Sea disputes

Chinese President Xi Jinping said in an address to Indonesia's parliament Thursday that territorial disputes in the South China Sea should be resolved peacefully through "equal-footed dialogue."
"With regard to differences and disputes between China and some Southeast Asian nations on territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, peaceful solutions should be sought," Xi told lawmakers on the second-day of his two-day visit.
"Differences and disputes should be properly handled through equal-footed dialogue and friendly consultation in the overall interests of bilateral ties and regional stability," he added.
A joint statement issued after Xi's talks with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Wednesday said the two leaders agreed to work toward "eventual adoption" of a code of conduct for claimant states in the South China Sea, in order to avoid clashes and facilitate a peaceful resolution of the disputes.
China and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations recently began talks to forge the code, but Beijing has openly hinted that it will be a time-consuming process.
Meanwhile, China's assertiveness in the South China Sea, which it claims almost in its entirety, has aggravated its territorial disputes with the Philippines, in particular.
Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei also have claims in the South China Sea.
