All three fleets of the PLA Navy were mobilized for China's largest naval exercise on Oct. 18 in the open seas of the West Pacific. The exercise follows the two-day joint naval drill held by the United States, South Korea and Japan over the Yellow Sea between Oct. 8-10, reports the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po.
After the US carrier USS George Washington was deployed to the waters of South Korea to participate in the exercise, China decided to expand the scale of its own Mobile 5 naval exercise, which began on Oct. 18 and will last until early November. While the North Sea and East Sea Fleets were ordered to conduct joint exercises with hundreds of warships in the Yellow Sea — the northern part of the East China Sea — between on Oct. 18, the South Sea Fleet launched a similar exercise in the South China Sea on Oct. 19.
The primary goal of the Mobile 5 naval exercise is to give the PLA Navy enough experience to combat a US carrier battle group in open seas. Insiders said that the naval facilities of the United States in both Japan and South Korea are considered a major threat to the coastline of China because aircraft carriers could potentially stage an attack from there. Through launching this latest exercise, naval personnel of the PLA will learn how to deal with US carrier battle group in a real combat, the insiders added.
Some experts said that it is not necessary for the PLA Navy to mobilize so many warships to combat one carrier battle group, however China will not face the Seventh Fleet of the United States alone in the Western Pacific, the paper said. The PLA Navy must also know how to deal with the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and the Republic of Korea Navy as well since Tokyo and Seoul are both key US allies in the region.
