Call it a virtual catfight, a non-issue, or a case of taking things personally, but the recent tit for tat between CNN broadcast journalist Anderson Cooper and ABS-CBN news anchor Korina Sanchez had netizens and TV viewers momentarily distracted from the grim images of the devastation left by Supertyphoon “Yolanda.”
Sanchez had earlier bashed Cooper over his critical reporting on the government’s slow response to the aftermath of Yolanda in Tacloban City. The CNN broadcaster responded in kind in an exchange that provoked a storm of comments from netizens, most of whom chided the two news personalities for their sideshow in the midst of a national disaster.
In his eponymously named program on CNN aired live from Manila yesterday morning, Cooper said of Sanchez’ earlier remarks: “A radio broadcaster named Korina Sanchez has taken issue with some of my reporting.  She also is not just a radio broadcaster; she also happens to be the wife of the Interior Minister (Secretary Manuel Roxas II) who is overseeing the relief effort on the ground. Miss Sanchez seems to be under the mistaken impression that I said I saw no presence of Philippine government on the ground in Tacloban. I never said that.”
Hot topic
Sanchez had criticized Anderson in her radio program on Wednesday afternoon on DZMM after he reported on the government’s less than stellar response to the needs of Yolanda survivors.  Said the ABS-CBN news anchor: “Itong si Anderson Cooper, sabi wala daw government presence sa Tacloban. Mukhang hindi niya alam  ang sinasabi niya. (This Anderson Cooper. He said there was no government presence in Tacloban. It seems he doesn’t know what he is saying).”
Sanchez’s remarks became a hot topic on Twitter, something that Cooper was not about to let slip by.  Said the CNN journalist: “Here’s what I actually said: As for who exactly is in charge of the Philippine side of operation, that is not really clear. I am just surprised. I expected on this Day Five, I thought I may have gotten here very late, that things will be well in hand; it does not seem like that. People are desperate, they do not have any place for shelter. It’s very difficult for people to get food, neighbors are helping out neighbors, water is in short supply, it is a very very bad situation here.”
Cooper, who arrived in Manila on Monday, took a dig at Sanchez for not being on the ground to do her reporting. “Miss Sanchez is welcome to go there (Tacloban City) and I would urge her to go there. I don’t know if she has, but her husband is the interior minister and I’m sure she can arrange a flight,” he added.
Deployed to Ormoc
Cooper was unaware that Sanchez had been deployed to Ormoc City, another town devastated by Yolanda, on Thursday night, her first time to see the destruction in the region.  Sanchez’s coanchors in the news program “TV Patrol,” Ted Failon and Noli de Castro, had flown to Tacloban City earlier—Failon on Thursday, while De Castro had been there since Monday.
The Inquirer sought out Sanchez for comment, but her talent manager GR Rodis said she was “out of reach.”  Sanchez, Rodis said over the phone, was “busy distributing relief goods either in Samar or in Northern Cebu. She told me her signal would be spotty.”
An ABS-CBN insider, who refused to be named due to lack of authority to speak on the issue, said both Failon and De Castro shared Cooper’s observation about the government’s slow response in the aftermath of Yolanda’s fury.
Cooper said that as a journalist, he made it a point to be as “accurate as possible” in his reports to “help people on the ground become more efficient.”
He added: “Accuracy is what we care most about here at CNN.”
Stressed the news anchor:  “I saw the work being done and the work that is not being done.”

Cooper also took on President Aquino’s comments on the foreign media’s unflattering coverage  of the government’s relief efforts, specifically the President’s “counsel” that reports by foreign journalists should not only be accurate but must also be able “to uplift the spirit of the Filipino people and show stories of resilience and hope and faith,  and show the world how strong the Filipinos are.”
In his program, Cooper replied: “All week long, in every report we have done, we have shown how strong the Filipinos are. The Filipino people, the people of Tacloban and Samar and Cebu, and all these places where so many have died, they are strong—not just to have survived this storm, but they are strong to have survived the aftermath of this storm,” he said.
“They have survived for a week now, often with very little food, with very little water, with very little medical attention. Can you imagine the strength it takes to be living in a shack, to be living, sleeping on the streets next to the body of your dead children? Can you imagine that strength? I can’t and I have seen that strength day in and day out in the Philippines and we honor them day in day out here in the Philippines, and we honor them with every broadcast that we make.”
Field day
Netizens too, had a field day, tweeting about the issue.
“It’s embarrassing for Filipinos that the wife of a high govt official is the source of so much division at a time when we should be united,” said netizen @Article8Jester.
“Ms. Korina Sanchez, act as a journalist not a wife! ’wag mo naman masyadong pene-personal ang trabaho mo! alam mo ang mali at tama,” said  netizen @akosiprettysam.
“Korina Sanchez should have the guts to go to tacloban and see the disaster for herself. Because saying something without the proof is BS,” said netizen  @LanceLim27.
“@andersoncooper gets all emotional as he talks about how strong Filipinos are. Just wanna go to him right now and hug him,” said  netizen  @NickeyyDees.
“Korina hiyang hiya naman daw si Anderson Cooper sa credibility mo,” netizen   @markdalas said.
“She reported in ormoc not in tacloban. She should do her reporting in tacloban without a face mask and smell the stench like Mr. Cooper.,” said netizen Jay Labayo.
Some netizens opted to look beyond the Sanchez-Cooper  virtual catfight.
“Korina Sanchez vs. Anderson Cooper. duh! this shouldn’t be an issue,” said netizen  @aikeevarona.
“Di nman tlaga alam ni Anderson Cooper, o kahit ni Korina Sanchez, o kahit sino, ang nangyayari.Ang tunay na nakakaalam? ’Yung mga nakakaranas,” said netizen  @w3cw3c.
“Bashing Korina Sanchez doesn’t make you a better person. Helping “Yolanda” victims does. Move on, people,”  netizen @albacharlyn posted on Twitter.
Blogger Niko Batallones chided Anderson for a different reason:
“Diyos ko po, Anderson, bakit mo pinatulan si Korina? “ tweeted @nikobatallones. With a report from Ramon Royandoyan

  • Thanks Mr. Copper for your accurate and timely reporting on Tacloban City, the ground zero of Yolanda's havoc. You gave us the real score of the government response specifically in its inefficiency in delivering the needed help for the victims after almost a week of the aftermath. Thank You too, for telling the world how strong the Filipinos are despite the desperate condition that they are experiencing they find reason to live. Well as for Korina, grow up and review your broadcasting ethics 101. You know what bias reporting is and you are doing a great disservice to your countrymen for looking at the other side refusing to see that the government is not doing things right to help the victims. Noy will be visiting Tacloban once again, I guess today, I hope not to salvage his popularity rating but to take charged on helping the victims. Noy unfortunately do not have the proper lieutenants he can rely on. Mar in fairness is doing his job but he seems lack the influence to do things. As DILG secretary he could have use the entire resources of his department to seek assistance from other local government unit not affected by typhoons. Parang si Mayor Duterte at Cebu City lang ang tumutulong sa ground zero. Olongapo City and Subic understandably cannot provide the help dahil binayo din sila ni Santi. Copper again, salamat sa tamang pamamahayag and tinuruan mo si Koring kung papaano ito dapat gawin. Koring, take a leave of absence muna, hiyang hiya naman ako sa iyong conflict of interest niyan. ABS-CBN, wala ba kayong mga kamay, pakitapal muna ang bibig ni Koring.

Why did Korina Sanchez lie if Andersoon Cooper clearly did not mention anything about the government in his statement? Korina Sanchez should just apologize, move on, and learn how to avoid repeating similar lies in the future.

  • Nov. 15 from JAPAN ASAHI NEWS BUREAU News Article
I have also watched BBC and they echoed CNN-AC's observations. So I think Korina is on the loosing side.
    __====================================
Japanese medical workers, SDF frustrated in typhoon-hit Philippines
    ========================================================
    By ETSUSHI TSURU/ Correspondent
TACLOBAN, Philippines--Japanese relief workers in the Philippines have been unable to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan due to a lack of fuel, deteriorating security and an organizational structure thrown into chaos by the disaster.
“Because of the fuel shortage, we do not have any vehicles to drive,” said Masashi Aoki, a 50-year-old nurse in the hard-hit city of Tacloban. “We managed to rent a bicycle to move around the city.”
Aoki is part of an advance team of Japanese medical personnel, primarily from the private sector, that arrived here Nov. 12 on Leyte Island. The Japanese discussed how to work together with medical assistance teams from France, South Korea and elsewhere.
But two days later, the Japanese medical team was told the hospital that planned to accept them had not finished the necessary preparations. The team had to make arrangements to change the site of its activities. However, the delayed arrival of the main Japanese medical team prevented relief operations from beginning by the end of the day.
The Japanese are not the only ones having problems starting full-scale relief activities a week after the typhoon slammed into the Philippines, which left an estimated 4,500 people dead and 3,800 injured as of Nov. 14, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Rescue and medical assistance teams from around the world have been arriving in the country. They all say a major stumbling block is the shortage of fuel.
Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez said Nov. 14 that some gas stations in the city would resume service that day. But electricity was still not running through the devastated city, and people were seen using hand-made tools to take gasoline from underground storage tanks.
The Self-Defense Forces are also struggling to provide assistance.
An SDF advance team of three people arrived on Leyte Island from Manila aboard a U.S. Osprey aircraft from Okinawa Prefecture on Nov. 14 to determine the extent of the damage and the security situation.
According to SDF officials, it was the first time for SDF personnel to board an Osprey, with the exception of military drills.
The SDF also airlifted medical equipment, medicine, water purification units and generators to central Cebu Island on Nov. 13.
An SDF medical unit of 20 personnel has been trying to get to Cebu Island but it remains stranded in Manila. Almost all private airplanes are fully booked.
“What we are watching most carefully is the local security situation,” Shigeru Iwasaki, chief of the SDF’s Joint Staff, said at a Nov. 14 news conference. “We will gather information not only from the Philippine government, but also from U.S. military troops who are working there so we will be able to secure the safety of our personnel.”
Looting and gunfire have been reported in the disaster areas.
Philippine presidential spokesman Ramon Carandang, who has been visiting the affected regions, asked foreign nations to understand that the Philippine government faces enormous difficulties in trying to deal with all the problems alone.
He said the Tacloban city government had been seriously damaged and could not play a leadership role as under normal conditions.
Carandang said the central government has to play a leading role in dealing with typhoon issues, although it knows less about local affairs than the Tacloban government.

  • If you watch the CNN reports they never fail to underscore the strength and resilience of Filipinos, particularly the victims. What irks Aquino is that he never gets praised, something that he is accustomed to from the local media. And why would the foreign press praise Aquino for his incompetent handling of the situation?

  • CNN's reporting is a major reason why so much aid has been flowing not only from the US but all over the world. They were there, they broadcasted the news repeatedly. They were spot on in their reporting. I added The Filipino Channel her in the US as well as GMA. My wife and I were disappointed that we didn't get news reports more often, especially since her family lived in Tacloban (they are now safe in Manila). The truth hurts. The government was unprepared. The response was slow. If CNN was able to get a whole crew there, so should the government, at the minimum to provide security. This tragedy was a force of nature that was compounded by the ineptness of our officials and the corruption of the politicians. People...get mad! Enough is enough! These politicians as well as corruption has got to stop. Stop electing the trash politicians and their families! Hold them accountable! Look at how all of them wallow in wealth! All of them. From Marcoses to the Binays to Enriles, Estradas, Revillas, Arroyos, Aquinos, all of them ....have the bathtub full of money like the Napolepigs, In the meantime, our infrastructure is lacking. The poor get poorer instead of being given education to better themselves. To give them a chance. Enough is Enough. Karma and God's will is not enough. The Filipinos need to stand up against this so future disasters can be dealt with properly BY FILIPINOS. Stop being duped by these people. The reason they spend so much to get elected is because they are going to steal more! So infuriating how many people are suffering because of the corruption in all levels and all sectors of government.

Rather than understanding truly what we can do, I too have been engaged in this highly contagious hatred on mediocre things. This Cooper vs Sanchez bullcrap is just one of them.
May I request to take this article down? And please, PDI, you can do more by communicating to your readers vital information more effectively rather than stirring controversy at this point in time.

Sure it addresses awareness towards responsible journalism. But publishing this news article on the home page of PDI? I see it as an invitation for us to be more divided than be together. Yeah, Korina should clam herself up and stop defending Mar. Cooper and the rest of CNN are heroic for bringing reality to the rest of the world.
Right now though, we should start thinking of ways to help out --- this article is not teaching us what we can do to respond appropriately where it is needed.

  • with the permission of the author, lemme repost the ff:
please viral this heartbreaking statement from director Peque Gallaga:
    I share the same thoughts
"Not since Marcos have we as a people been so polarized. As far as our hearts and minds are concerned it’s like we’re in the edge of a civil war. We are forced to take a hard look at ourselves and what we value.
Because of this, we are fighting friends in coffee houses, on the telephone, and on Facebook. We are a people whose lives have been upended. We don’t know what to do to get things done right and right away. We lash out. We insult our leaders trying to get them to do a lot more than to pose for photo ops – of giving out relief goods on a one-by-one basis. We cry desperately for demonstrable government response – we get almost next to nothing. It is increasingly apparent that local media goes hand in hand with self-servicing Malacañang press releases which are more concerned with their showbiz image than confronting, accepting and dealing with the problem. What our leaders tell us is contradicted by the reports from international commentators who are understandably more objective and growing less dispassionate as they witness the horrors around them. What our leaders tell us is also contradicted by the victims in these areas who are slowly able to give us the true picture of the realities of the situation. And the reality is that people are starving. The dead still lie on the streets even five days after the event. There are anguished souls scavenging for whatever they can to survive, as well as professional looters ambushing the helpless and relief caravans. It’s a war zone out there.
This disaster has affected, not only the islands in the path of Yolanda, but all of us as a nation. We have all been judged and found wanting. But more worrisome, is that we take a long hard look at our leaders and we judge and we find them wanting. It is worrisome because we have chosen them and are paying them to serve the needs of our nation and it seems that they can’t deliver. I don’t think that anybody, even the most criminal politician, can be that hard-hearted and close his eyes to this calamity so I can only surmise that they don’t know what to do. That they are impotent and incompetent. I am 70 years old and I don’t know what to do, but then again, I didn’t run for office promising the voters that I would take care of national concerns.
I am a private citizen and like most of my fellow citizens, have given of what I have to the relief effort. I have given to the point of hurting. I am 70 years old and have been stupid a lot of times for seven decades. I want to think that I can be a little less stupid now. This time, I want to make sure that my hard-earned money will reach its intended goal. I am sick and tired of throwing away my money; of making our politicians wealthy because of my unconcern and my inattention. I am sick and tired of my stupidity.
So I very much care now where all this help is going. I read Marvin Xanth Geronimo who was there when Yolanda struck: that TV personalities and politicians like Mar Roxas and Ted Failon going to Tacloban for the photo op. They never helped; endless tracking video shots of flattened towns with people walking clutching a plastic bottle of water with no government presence whatsoever; Korina Sanchez calling Anderson Cooper “misinformed”. Cooper was in Tacloban. Korina was not; the US landing 5 planes full of goods and not allowing any politicians to touch any of it. How much more do we need for us to realize that the enemy was not Yolanda? Yolanda was just a force of nature. The enemy is our leaders. And the leader of our leaders is the President.
So what now? There’s nothing I can actually do. I can only rage, rage against the dying of common decency. I can only rage against this man who claimed in a Christiane Amanpour interview that he couldn’t get to the disaster areas because the weather after the storm left didn’t permit him to fly. This is 24 hours after the sun was shining all over the Philippines by then. I can only rage against a man who made light of the tragedy, refusing to identify it as a major disaster; who made light of a victim of looting who was shot at by telling him, “But you did not die, right?” I rage against a man who continually blames the LGU’s on the ground for their incompetence and their inefficiency because it is beginning to dawn on me that these Visayan LGU’s happen to be Romualdez people and this man is playing politics with people’s lives.
This is a crime. What this man does is unconscionable. I can only state it here. I can do nothing about it for now. I will wait for whatever movement develops after this fiasco and I will join it. But for now, what I can do is to declare that I am deeply offended by the people who try to stop me and others from stating the obvious. All those people who charge us for criticizing, for being negative, for Aquino bashing – I am done with these people. In a very Yellow Army way, they try to hide behind an illogical argument that we cannot help if we criticize. I don’t know how good these friends are at multi-tasking, but one does not cancel out the other. We can help and we can criticize. And at this point I am convinced that we do help when we criticize; if at one point we can, as Hamlet says, “catch the conscience of the king.” But I know that this is futile. This man is no king. He is not even a real representative. What can you expect from someone who never worked an honest day in his life. What could he possibly relate to?
So my friends who accuse me of Aquino bashing: I want you to know that I’m done with your line of thinking. Either you defend this man or you defend the people that this man is ignoring. Don’t believe that the people are his “boss”. This was a piece of advertising sound byte created by showbiz experts to get the unthinking masses out there to swallow this uniquely unqualified man. This man who is totally unprepared for the most difficult job in the country. So my friends, as far as I’m concerned, you choose him or you choose the people. But if you instruct me again to stop bashing this man I am unfriending you. I will unfriend you in Facebook, on Twitter, on Instagram, and out in our leaderless streets."

  • So now, what happens to ABS-CBN being CNN's affiliate? Anderson's bosses must be thinking hard about whether to continue the affiliate relationship or to look for another Philippine TV network to work with. And which one do you think exhibits more professionalism and credibility among the big ones around? Maybe CNN should go back to hiring hard-working stringers who don't have heavy political hangups like ABS-CBN does.

The sad state in reality politics and red tapes are compounding the greatest humanitarians efforts ever launched by the the world its a shame that this will complicate well intended humanitarian efforts...To the very victims its does no matter who is who in this emergency...What matter to them is a fast and much needed help at this time...feel sorry and ashamed that this come to this...Lets move on and focus more of the humanitarian efforts at hand...What a world?...

  • What good has Cooper's unsavory comments (i see it as meddling) done to the overall relief efforts in particular? Nothing, except sowing intrigues and distractions! Was his US government really efficient in its relief operations in the aftermath of that disastrous & deadly Katrina that hit the US a few years ago? Cooper should have looked at his own backyard (country) before uttering insensitive remarks.

    • I largely agree with your comment as Cooper is no different from other correspondents in the country. They want an eye catching story and saying everything is perfect would clearly be difficult to justify or be credible and I am not sure any natural disaster is handled perfectly in the manner many would believe is possible.
Also we are fixated about the US as we have large numbers in the country whether legal or illegal and they tend to look at one nations media for information .... the US but this hardly gives balance. There are many different foreign journalists and TV teams in the country and examining them may give a little balance. I am sure they have not given the government a lot of praise in the early days but are balanced in their portrayal of an administration gearing up for a massive effort. They also acknowledge the quick request for international assistance.
One thing they keep mentioning is how resilient we are and yet we are a poor country in comparison to many and it is the poorest who are usually the worst effected by natural disasters. But you can see the occasional smile from people who have lost so much.
It is the large number of us who ridicule our peoples efforts whether government or individual acts of kindness who let us down. I assume some have a political agenda, which is sick at this time and/or are safe in distant lands and are happy to write a few critical remarks before going out for a meal or party in a safe and secure environment.

Good money at these times kasi dami criticisms ni Noynoy or anyone na ally ni Noynoy. Per artticle na idefend mo si Noynoy ( i dont call him president cause he's not even close to being a student council president ) 200 pesos. Sarap ng work mo work at home, of maybe sa starbucks ka ngayon nag aabang ng mga news paper feeds, tweets, commentaries, na laban ke Noynoy then attack ka like a lapdog. May nag alok sa akin niyan. Tempting kasi nga gagawin mo lang makipag away sa mga ibang commentators or i defend si noynoy or anyone allied with noynoy. Dati 100 pesos lang bigayan per article. Ngayon i heard 200 daw. Then kunwari di mo alam ang topic ask ka help sa team leader nio. Si team leader naman magforward ng template sa yo. Ikaw na mag edit or mag dagdag. Uy bistado na kayo. I hope Mr. Anderson Cooper understands that. I thank myself that Mr. Cooper is not a Filipino or else he should have applied another bad Filipino character - Pikon, and therefore just turn his back and leave.

She is nothing but a politician's wife pretending to be a journalist fit only for the yellow press but not where intelligent reporting is required. And as for those of you here who want to defend her, make sure you really know what REAL journalism is all about. She could look to Atom Araullo on an example as to what a true journalist is.

  • Hindi lang kasi sanay sila sa "call it as we see it" type of journalism. Kahit sino pa masagasaan. You should watch how Mar handled his questions when he got interviewed by a differnt CNN reporter. He was asked why the same bodies lie in the street and not have been picked up. Sabi ni Mar, "you must have seen a different body since we pick them up daily". Ang sabi ni CNN reporter "No, it was not a different body it was the same body as yesterday". "we are what we tolerate"

  • Anderson Cooper is objective. He has balances & emphasized both the positives & negatives. Korina Sanchez should see for herself what's going on in Tacloban. It's been reported she went to a city/town about 60 miles from Ground Zero... what da ????
Has Binay or PNoy been to Tacloban in person? How about Roxas?
PNoy's PR machine will put their own spin on everything to enhance his image - tsk tsk

    • Kung ibabalita ng ABS CBN, it will validate the ineptness of Korina Sanchez...ang anchor ay dapat credible, fair and objective..pero Korina has lost all of it...look at the Napoles issue, very tame ang reporting nya and accomodating sya kay "Mam Janet" (makes one wonder, anong regalo ni Mam sa kanilang bonggang casal),.... sa Bagyo sa Visayas, she reported and wish to downplay the severity of the problem there...all of these to protect the image of the husband...nasaan ang integrity nya?..should we believe what she reports? ...self interests, family interests are supreme in her journalistic endeavour...she should step down as the star anchor of ABS CBN news...leave it to TEd Failon and Karen Davila...Noli de Castro ewan ko, thank God hindi naging Presidente!!!!
