Storm surge turns streets into rivers of debris
TACLOBAN CITY - Super typhoon Yolanda wrought havoc on Tacloban City with storm surges flooding large parts of the city on Friday.
Video footage taken by ABS-CBN shows strong winds destroying houses, with a storm surge carrying large piles of debris on streets.
At around 6 a.m., ABS-CBN News correspondent Atom Araullo was reporting live for "Umagang Kay Ganda" near downtown Tacloban.
However, he and the rest of his team could not stay outdoors for long because of strong winds and heavy rains.
They decided it would be best to go inside a building. Around 30 minutes later, Araullo again did a live report, this time indoors.
The ABS-CBN News team stayed in the 2nd floor of the building, and when they looked out the window, they were stunned with what they saw.
The street where Araullo was standing just half an hour ago turned into a virtual river with lots of debris.
Floodwaters quickly rose, even reaching up to 10 feet.
Tacloban also lost power and communication lines were cut off.
TV Patrol anchor Ted Failon who is in Tacloban City, described the devastation as worse than tropical storm Sendong in 2011.
A storm surge swamped the city, possibly affecting the entire downtown, Failon said.
The storm surge carried away an ABS-CBN crew vehicle and destroyed transmission equipment.
It, however, spared the lives of the entire news team in the city.
