China's state media outlets cited experts as saying that the Philippines' provocation in the disputed South China Sea is being backed by the United States and if the Philippines continues with its provocative behavior, China might seize some islets from the Philippines.

Yu Zhirong, the vice captain of the China Marine Surveillance Donghai Corps said that in general, China has maintained friendly ties with the majority of Southeast Asian countries and they should negotiate while seeking resolution to these problems, according to a report on the website of China's nationalistic Global Times.

Yu stated, however, that the long standing South China Sea dispute could easily trigger unexpected incidents since the root cause of the problem had not been resolved.

The Philippines appears to have acted fearlessly because it has been backed by "a leading power outside of the region," Yu said, adding that China should respond firmly.

The website reported that China is capable of launching a strike against the Southeast Asian country and seizing the islets that the paper said had been illegally occupied by the Philippines.

After the United States and the Philippines signed a defense cooperation deal, about 2,500 US soldiers, 3,000 Filipino soldiers and an Australian troop have launched military drills, starting on May 5, in the controversial waters of South China Sea.

On May 6, a ranking military official of the Philippines disclosed to the Tokyo-based Kyodo News a defense plan for the South China Sea. The four-year plan aims at safeguarding its sovereignty in the disputed waters to prevent China from occupying more areas which are home to abundant natural resources.

The China Youth Daily, the official newspaper of Communist Youth League of China, cited an official who said that to protect the rights of his nation, the Philippines had to defend itself against China's invasion of Filipino territorial waters and the harassment meted out to Filipino fishermen.
