The iconic tech company known for the iPhone and other stylish and user-friendly products is back in the top spot on this year’s list, for the seventh year in a row. Apple, the most valuable brand on the planet according to Interbrand, brought in $171 billion in revenues in FY2013 and is flush with cash, but fan boys and girls (not to mention the market) are getting antsy to see its next big product. Bets are on a smartwatch or AppleTV, but the company is also reportedly turning its attention to cars and medical devices.

The e-commerce behemoth may be gobbling up brick and mortar businesses left and right, but Amazon.com’s customer-centric culture and super-convenience has won the company millions of shoppers worldwide. And Amazon’s ambitions show no signs of abating: it recently jumped into the art market, and has started producing video, music, and literary content. Revenues are impressive, but the Street is growing impatient for Amazon to post big profits.

Though it dropped a spot to Amazon.com this year, Google continues to find ways to make life easier (sometimes creepily so) via mind-blowing Internet products. It also seeks to blow minds with its innovative “moonshot projects,” like the production of driverless cars. Google, which saw revenues climb 22% in 2013, acquired among other things, a handful of robotics companies and Nest, the smart thermostat company last year.

Once a single coffee shop in Seattle, Starbucks is now ubiquitous, and the world’s leading place to grab a cup of joe. Thanks in part to those strong global sales and the success of seasonal drinks like the much buzzed-about pumpkin spice latte, Starbucks had another record year in FY2013. The company is also branching out into tea bars and cold-pressed juice joints, and continues to work on improving the quality of its food (maligned even by CEO Howard Schultz) and the digital sophistication of its operations.

Americans are still waging an all-out war on obesity and in turn sugary drinks, but Coca-Cola is still strong thanks to the fortitude of its brand, efforts overseas and creative partnerships at home. The world’s largest beverage company plans to invest more than $4 billion in China from 2015 to 2017 and may sweeten the deal by offering healthier drinks in the region like juice and almond milk. The soda giant is also planning to ditch some of its bottles and cans to make way for a home soda machine. The company recently signed a 10-year deal with Green Mountain to sell its beverages through the popular single-serve system Keurig.

The famed storytellers at Walt Disney had a breakout year in 2013. After years of producing disappointing flicks, Walt Disney Animation Studios hit a homerun with Frozen. The animated musical has grossed nearly $1 billion and is set to outsell The Lion King in overall box office sales. The movie struck such a chord with Disney’s audience that the company has plans to bring it to Broadway.

In a digital age increasingly run by e-commerce and one-click shopping, delivering packages on time is not easy. FedEx, founded in 1971, has responded to the challenge. The delivery company reported in December that net income was up 14% from last year to $500 million, largely due to a bump up in express shipping. Companies like Amazon are creating more distribution centers closer to their customers. FedEx is responding by ramping up ground transportation efforts so it can deliver packages more quickly. Overall, as the economy goes, so often does FedEx. The company is enjoying an uptick in people shopping and shipping again.

The company has experienced 40 consecutive years of profitability, and net incomes hit $805 million in 2013. The American travel favorite is now looking to take its service internationally. Southwest will begin sending passengers to Aruba, the Bahamas and Jamaica in July 2014.

In 2013 global management consulting firm the Hay Group (who are Fortune’s partners in the World’s Most Admired survey) rated Procter and Gamble the number one company in the world for leadership. It was the first time since 2005 P&G topped the list, and it happened the same year the company brought back A.G. Lafley as CEO, who had led from 2000-2009. The move was made to reach their goal of shaving $10 billion off their books by 2016. LinkedIn ranked Procter and Gamble the fourth most in-demand employer of 2013, and the company generated $84 billion in revenue that same fiscal year.

In 2013 it paid $2 billion for Softlayer, a cloud company with 13 data centers. This year it promised a $1.2 billion investment to expand its global cloud footprint with the goal of reaching 40 centers in 13 countries by the end of 2014.

In the past few years, Nordstrom has made overtures to the younger, thriftier shopper by partnering with British fast-fashion brand Topshop and by offering a wider mix of high to low merchandise. It continues to grow by opening more Nordstrom Rack outlet stores, which are less risky to launch than the larger flagship stores. This year the company will venture into Canada for the first time with plans to open six stores by the end of 2016.

It’s not every CEO who writes a treatise on how to make money and have a heart, but leave it to Whole Foods co-founder John Mackey, who last year co-authored the book Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business. Mackey advocates that profits follow from a “higher purpose” — including being nice to the environment — and isn’t afraid to put his foot down; he and co-chief executive Walter Robb declared that all products in their U.S. and Canada stores containing Genetically Modified Organisms will have to be labeled by 2018.
