MANILA, Philippines–A British journalist and author of two books on Southeast Asia, one of which was named Book of the Year by The Economist, will visit the Philippines next week and conduct lectures on the South China Sea dispute.
Bill Hayton, a reporter of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and an analyst on Southeast Asian affairs, will give two lectures on the South China Sea in Manila on Feb. 13, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
Hayton is the author of “The South China Sea: The Struggle for Power in Asia,” published in September/October 2014 by the Yale University Press.
According to his website, Hayton’s trip to the Philippines is part of his book tour in Southeast Asia that includes Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
Hayton will talk at Ateneo de Manila University as part of the Ateneo Professional Schools’ Public International Lecture Series. His lecture follows the Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio’s discussion on the South China Sea issue a few weeks ago.
Golez to participate
Hayton will also lecture on “The South China Sea and China’s Geopolitical Interests” at the DFA office in Pasay City as part of the Foreign Service Institute Mangrove Forum on International Relations. It will be participated in by former National Security Adviser and West Philippine Sea coconvenor Roilo Golez.
Hayton had been conducting lectures on the South China Sea, Vietnam and contemporary Southeast Asia at universities including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Georgetown, Peking University and the University of the Philippines.
He also wrote another book on Southeast Asia, “Vietnam: Rising Dragon,” published by Yale University Press in 2010.
Hayton has worked with BBC World News television in London as well as with other international media agencies like The Associated Press Television, Dow Jones Television and Al Jazeera.
