BAGUIO CITY, Philippines—The widows and parents of the Cordillera warriors who died in Mamasapano, Maguindanao province, want President Aquino to apologize and take responsibility for the Jan. 25 slaughter of 44 police commandos.
Janet Carap, Christine Kiangan, Aurelyn Kayob, Celestino and his wife Jocelyn Bilog held hands and gave each other the sign of peace during a Mass that was organized by the Philippine National Police Academy Alumni Association Inc. at Burnham Park on Sunday.
Peace remains elusive unless President Aquino apologizes for the government’s mistakes and ends the finger-pointing that has characterized the inquiry into the bloody Mamasapano mission, they said.
Janet is the widow of PO2 Peterson Carap, Christine is the widow of PO2 Noble Kiangan while Aurelyn, a migrant worker, is the widow of PO2 Jerry Kayob. The Bilogs are the parents of PO1 Russel Bilog, a bachelor.
“An apology is all we ask. We want President Aquino to accept responsibility for [Mamasapano], apologize publicly and sincerely and then investigate the one who gave those orders that led to the deaths of our family members,” Celestino Bilog said.
“This issue would not have gone unanswered this long had the President simply stepped up and apologized,” he said.
Celestino said this act would have tempered the public’s anger and would have compelled Aquino to quickly punish the people who made mistakes in handling the mission.
“He may have been given bad information. He may have been told that everything was going right so he was confident about the mission succeeding. But he could have stopped all [the tension],” he said.
He said he did not like the way Director Getulio Napeñas Jr., the dismissed Special Action Force (SAF) chief, was being treated. “He was following someone else’s orders so he should not shoulder all the blame,” he said.
Janet Carap said the families of the slain SAF commandos from the Cordillera “need to move on with our lives,” but the government’s inability to reveal everything about Mamasapano has kept them from grieving properly.
“Our grieving has not ended. We have not been able to join the assemblies organized by the government outside Baguio City because we cannot leave this city until we have completed our burial rituals for [Bilog],” Celestino said.
Also on Sunday in Pampanga province, around 400 policemen from Central Luzon joined a march from the provincial capitol in the City of San Fernando to the regional police headquarters in Camp Olivas. They lighted 44 candles for the slain SAF commandos–With reports from Vincent Cabreza and EV Espiritu, Inquirer Northern Luzon; and Tonette Orejas, Inquirer Central Luzon

This is just more drama. I thought the President already accepted responsibility in a very public media event. No official apology is required. But he certainly gave his condolence to each family in person. A very public investigation has already been completed by the Senate .

When american special forces soldier Pat Tillman died because of friendly fire did his family asked for an apology from the US gov't or from george w bush? NO. because they know the risk of a soldier's life
A President is being asked to apologize and resign over an operation that causes the death of 44 Special Police Forces in Enemy line while doing their job and sworn duty. apologize? they know the risks of their job. I cannot believe that some FILIPINOS are ASKING a Good, Honest, President of the Philippines to RESIGN OVER a Military operation that went wrong. .
These relatives are obviously being used and cajoled by anti pnoy forces. Those people (trapos, binayarans, hooligans) asking for truth is really not for the truth but to divide the country and advance the greed and interest of few of the individuals
Meanwhile, close to 60 American servicemen and women DIED EVERY SINGLE MONTH for 13 STRAIGHT YEARS in Afghanistan and Iraq. About 12% of them DUE to MAJOR ERRORS, including Friendly Fire by the American military in the field.
HUNDREDS of US Special Forces are killed in Somalia, Iran, Cuba Iraq, and Syria due to MISCALCULATIONS and ERRORS in judgement by Generals and in two cases, all the way to the office of the President...
DID you ever see an american uprising to Ask Presidents Kennedy, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr. Clinton, Bush Jr. and Obama to resign???
Vietnamese has lost a total 7,000 troops fighting toe to toe against China in the late 1980's and parts of the 1990's ! UMIIYAK ba sila to Overthrow their leaders ?
Or are they even tougher than ever to stand up to China!!!
War, or military operations, is NOT an exact science, more so emphasized when you do not have equipment like that of the United States. Too many things could go wrong, even if you planned ahead and thought of every concievable scenario. Leaders make good and bad decisions. That is part of the job.
More than 3000 Canadians died at Dieppe but nobody wanted Churchill out. Bay of Pigs was a total failure but nobody wanted Kennedy out. More than 1.3 million Vietnamese died during the Vietnam War but Ho Chi Minh was still revered as their true leader. Now what the fudge!!
1979, then President Carter attempted to rescue the American hostages held by militant Iranian students who took over the US Embassy. The rescue was a big failure with 8 American servicemen dead, 1 Iranian civilian dead and two aircraft destroyed.
In September 11, 2001, Al Qaeda terrorist hijacked passenger airlines and two of them hit the Twin Towers in New York. The terrorist attack in mainland USA resulted to more than 2,000 deaths. Later investigation revealed that CIA senior officials failed to share information with FBI that two of the hijackers could have been prevented from carrying out their roles. This attack led to the creation of Department of Homeland Security.
In March 19,2003, then President Bush announced the beginning of the Operation Iraqi Freedom. Weeks later after it started, reports about Iraq's WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) were not supported by the underlying intelligence.
Back to the Philippines, in 1974, there was a fierce battle happening in Jolo where about 10,000 Muslim and Chinese civilians were killed by the Philippine military when they burned down Jolo. Two years later, the imeldific wife of the dictator Marcos went to Libya to forge a peace agreement with the MNLF.
Do you know HOW MANY MAJOR MISTAKES U.S. Forces have made every single year in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, and Africa in the last 20 years???
Do you know how many THOUSANDS of American lives have been LOST due to Friendly Fire and MISCALCULATED Decisions by both the Defense Secretary and the US President such as Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr. , Clinton, and Bush Jr. that DIRECTLY cost the Livest of MANY MANY Young and brave American fighters?
Do you know that about 50-60 Americans DIED in battle EVERY SINGLE MONTH for the last 13 years STRAIGHT in the Middle East alone during the Iraq/Afghan war???

apology proves admission. what is there to apologize when the president cannot admit he was responsible? Well maybe he wasn't ! so shut the fack up, and also all these talk about blood money.
if these families think what the government provided is blood money, then just don't accept all the benefits that has been offered (pension, scholarship, cash award, house and lot payment, etc..), and maybe people will believe you. otherwise shut the fack up hypocrites.

The 44 SAF men deserves tons of respect. They don't deserve to be used by anyone to advance a personal agenda. Otherwise their heroism and courage for the country will be without meaning.
