"China should first renounce its claims on our Exclusive Economic Zone and withdraw their forces and dismantle their facilities within our EEZ before the Philippines can even consider China a good faith friend."

While in Vietnam, I am sure the President will see how Vietnam has stood up for centuries against giant neighbor China, engaging China diplomatically and economically, but not yielding to China's territorial aggression and now opening the channels for an alliance with America, its former enemy, forgetting the bloody ten-year Vietnam-US war, to address the national security threat that China poses in the present. In national security, it is present threat that is primordial. Past is past.
The Philippines as a nation has moved on from the Philippine-American War more than a century ago and is now culturally, socially, economically and strategically interlocked with America. Ninety-two per cent (92%) of the Filipino people believe so, as shown by recent surveys.
China should first renounce its claims on our Exclusive Economic Zone and withdraw their forces and dismantle their facilities within our EEZ before the Philippines can even consider China a good faith friend. Otherwise, we as a people should remain vigilant and always on guard in the face of China's charm offensive.
We should be forewarned and not forget Sun Tzu's teaching: "All warfare is based on deception." China deceived the Philippines when they grabbed Mischief Reef in 1995. China deceived the Philippines when they grabbed Scarborough Shoal in 2012.
