Japan: Self-Defense Forces Will Sail With U.S. Navy In South China Sea
Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said her country is prepared to increase its engagement in the South China Sea, including having its Maritime Self-Defense Forces join in training cruises with the U.S. Navy and with those of other nations, Reuters reported Sept. 15. Joint Japanese patrols with the U.S. military in the contested waters, which Beijing previously had termed a "red line," would greatly complicate China's strategy for the region. In addition to the joint cruises, Tomomi told the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies that Japan would participate in bilateral and multilateral exercises with regional navies and help coastal states in the region build their law enforcement capabilities.
