Japan to expand Djibouti military base

Japan will lease additional land in 2017 to expand a military base in the eastern African nation of Djibouti to counter what it sees as growing Chinese influence in the region, Japanese officials were quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.
In February China began construction in Djibouti of its first overseas military facility: a coastal logistics base that will resupply naval vessels taking part in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.
Djibouti is the home of Japan's only foreign military base and the United States' only acknowledged base in Africa, as well as there being a long-standing French military presence.
