Comparison between China's Liaoning class aircraft carrier and the US Nimitz class aircraft carrier:
Much has been written about the sortie of the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning into the Miyako Strait, skirting Taiwan and Japan, into Bashi Channel between Batanes and Taiwan then back to its Hainan homeport. How does the Liaoning compare to the Nimitz class carrier of the US Navy?
Displacement in Tons: The Liaoning is around 55,000 tons while the Nimitz class is around 100,000 tons
Propulsion: The Liaoning has conventional power, steam turbines with boilers while the Nimitz has 2 nuclear reactors
Speed: Almost the same at 30+ knots
Range: The Liaoning has a range of around 7,100 kilometers while the Nimitz has unlimited range
Number of aircraft: The Liaoning has 36 while the Nimitz has 90.
There is only one Liaoning class carrier while there are ten Nimitz class carriers.
