Golez: It is ironic that while some sectors would like to project and boost the image of China during the ASEAN Summit, even calling it the No. 1 economic power of the world (note: It is not no.1. Its GDP is $11.2 trillion, a far second to the US GDP of $18.5 trillion), what happened is the Summit became the venue for the leaders of the US (President Trump), India (PM Modi), Japan (PM Abe) and Australia (PM Turnbull) to meet on the side to discuss and start forging the Indo-Pacific Quadrilateral Alliance aimed at counterbalancing the aggressiveness of China in the East China Sea, South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. This was indeed an opportune time as it was difficult for the said leaders to meet. The Philippines became their venue. As I have noted three years ago, China's aggressiveness is triggering an alliance against itself.
This Indo-Pacific Quadrilateral is economically and militarily powerful:
ECONOMIC:
The US a GDP of $18.5 trillion, Japan GDP is $4.9 trillion, India GDP is $ 2.2 trillion and Australia GDP is $1.2 trillion for a combined GDP of $ 26.8 trillion compared to China's GDP of $11.2 trillion.
MILITARY:
Militarily, the US is ranked a very far No. 1 military power of the world, India is ranked No. 5, Japan is ranked no. 4 and Australia is ranked No. 22 (it is modernizing its submarine force with the procurement of $35 billion worth of new modern submarines from France.
China is ranked No. 3.

China also said the US-brokered proposal of these countries to ensure free and open "Indo-Pacific ... should avoid politicising or excluding some relevant parties".
"The relevant proposal should be open and inclusive and should be conducive to the win-win cooperation and avoid politicising or excluding some relevant parties," foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said.
"From China's persistent foreign policy, we welcome the development of friendly cooperation between the relevant countries and we hope these kind of relations is not directed against any third party and we hope these kind of relations will be conducive to the regional peace and stability." Geng added.
The region described by India and US as "Indo-Pacific" is called "Asia-Pacific" by China.
The representatives of the four countries met for the first time on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit on Sunday.
Later, India's external affairs ministry said: "The discussions focused on cooperation based on their converging vision and values for promotion of peace, stability and prosperity in an increasingly inter-connected region that they share with each other and with other partners.
