Things made obsolete by technology

THE evolution of technology brings progress but, ironically, it also “killed” some businesses that had been useful to us.

The development of smartphones and tablets and the so-called “unli power” and bundled package offered by giant networks caused so much loss to those with related businesses.

Here are some of the things  that we no longer use today because of technological advancements:

* Betamax/VHS. My VHS player still working. Imagine you have to buy a rewinder then just to play back the missed part or watch again the whole movie. Do you still remember the last movie in VHS tape you’ve rented before the shop closed its business?

* Dial 114 for directory assistance. The operator surely missed this job. But because of internet powered by Google, everything now can be search in the web including the numbers, address and email address of establishments.

* Yellow page directory. The last time I got my phone directories is three years ago until the phone company no longer print its annual issue.

* Print photographs. The growth of digital photography made this print photocopy obsolete. Today, thousands of photos can be filed and stored in one single compact disc without worries of fading.

* Public phones. Malls had removed public phones along their entrances and near the comfort rooms. Even PLDT and Eastern Telecoms had recalled hundreds of their public phones installed on streets.

* Portable cassette player. Walkman of Sony is so popular to music lovers and press people before. But MP3 paralyzed the “Walkman” and later become obsolete.

35mm camera. Imagine the hassles of putting the film, have it developed before you can see the result, the technology of digital photography keep on the excitement of picture taking fast, easy and convenient.

* Encyclopedia. Owning a set of encyclopedia before gives students an edge in doing their studies and homework. But because of the internet and Google search, encyclopedia is just a thing of the past.

Fax machine. Only few offices and establishments still using fax machine. Many preferred emails without hassle of garbled words or letters.

* Pen pals. When was the last time you write sweet-nothings to your pen pal? The power of text messaging made love notes quick and simple to send. You don’t have to buy nice and scented pens to impress the receiver.

* Phone book. Do you still carry a phone book? The technology of expanded cellphone and SIM card memory help you store without memorizing hundreds of phone numbers and email addresses.

Pagers. Easy Call and Pocketbell, remember? You still have to dial the operator for them tosend your message. Cellphone text messaging in 1997 replaced this keeping the message private and quick to send.

* Photo album. Bookstores and department stores no longer display this item. People preferred the social networking with more likes and comments.

* Post cards. Do you still send postcards? People find animated e-cards lovable and easy send.
