A Highlight and Note by MR. J. ROILO GOLEZ
- MR. J. ROILO GOLEZ: Mitsuo Fuchida, the Japanese officer who led the attack on Pearl Harbor: "He came to realize that the Philippines was a proud, fierce nation, an irreconcilable enemy of any nation threatening its freedom."
The almost unanimous hostility of the natives impressed Fuchida more than anything else on his Philippine tour. He had spent much time in China, and the Chinese had no cause to love the Japanese. Either they were less unfriendly or more clever at hiding their feelings, for Fuchida had never noticed any particular hostility from them. Here in the Philippines the people made no effort at concealment. “Anyone could see it in their eyes, their gestures, their facial expressions,” said Fuchida. Gradually he came to realize that the Philippines was a proud, fierce nation, an irreconcilable enemy of any nation threatening its freedom.
