Tokyo (Alliance News) - Visiting Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang was due to meet Japanese Emperor Akihito on Monday and political and business leaders amid tensions over territorial disputes in Asian waters.
Sang, who arrived in Tokyo on Sunday, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are expected talk about economic and security cooperation when the two meet on Tuesday amid Beijing's growing assertiveness in the disputed waters of the South China Sea.
China claims most of the South China Sea. Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Brunei have competing claims with Beijing.
Vietnam seeks to maintain maritime and aviation safety through cooperation with partners such as Japan and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Kyodo News quoted Sang as saying.
He said he hopes that countries will "adequately handle existing differences" through peaceful dialogue and in compliance with international laws.
Sang also said "we follow with deep attention" the situation in the East China Sea, where Japan, Taiwan and China have overlapping claims.
The Japanese-administered Senkaku Islands are also claimed by China and Taiwan, where they are known as Diaoyu and Tiaoyutai, respectively.
