Laos expresses views on South China Sea situation
PUBLISHED: 25-JUN-14 08:36AMVIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a letter to the Vietnamese Embassy in Vientiane on Monday expressing Laos' views on developments in the South China Sea.
In the letter, the ministry said Laos views the South China Sea as an important and sensitive region; thus maintaining and further promoting peace, stability, and cooperation in this part of the world is of great importance.
Laos has been following developments in the area closely and with concern.
It urges all parties involved to exercise self-restraint and avoid actions that could lead to increased tension in the area, and to resolve disputes through peaceful means without resorting to threats or the use of force, in accordance with international law including the 1982 UN Conve ntion on the Law of the Sea.
The letter also gave Laos' view on the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.
“Laos is of the view that the strong momentum gained in the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, including the positive momentum of the on-going official consultations on the Code of Conduct, should be maintained and further strengthened, thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of peace, stability and cooperation in the South China Sea,” the letter read.
