MANILA – Six out 10 Filipinos have little trust in China, a new Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey revealed.

The June 2015 survey said 62% of Filipinos have little trust in China while 17% have much trust in the Asian giant, resulting in a record-low net trust rating of -45.

SWS said China's lowest net trust score surpassed the previous record-low of -36 in June 2014, May 2012, and June 1995, when the Philippines and China had a confrontation in the Mischief Reef.

The plunge in China's net trust rating comes as the Philippines and the Asian giant are in a bitter dispute over their competing claims in the South China Sea.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea as its maritime territory. Malaysia, Brunei, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines also have claims.

SWS noted that China's net trust rating has been positive in only 7 out of 35 surveys from 1994 to 2015.

The pollster observed that China's net trust rating ranged from bad to poor during the first Mischief Reef confrontation in 1995.

It fell to bad territory in June 1999 during the second Mischief Reef incident, and in December 2008 at the height of the melamine scare.

In contrast, the US and Australia enjoy the trust of Filipinos.

The June survey shows US getting a ''very good'' +64. Australia got a ''good'' +36.

Net trust in Saudi Arabia was a ''neutral'' -9, while Malaysia got a ''poor'' -10.

Meanwhile, SWS said 51% of Filipinos paid close attention to news involving the West Philippine Sea dispute. The issue is the fifth most followed news item.

The four most followed news events were the boxing fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (78%), the case of Mary Jane Veloso (57%), the pork barrel scam (57%), and the K to 12 program (52%).

The June 2015 survey was conducted from June 5-8, 2015 using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults nationwide, 300 each in Metro Manila, Balance of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

It had sampling error margins of 3% for national percentages, and 6% each for Metro Manila, Balance of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. have 'little trust' in China – SWS
