Spratlys fishermen get fiberglass boats
More than 100 fisherfolk from the Kalayaan Island Group received fishing gear and rainwater collectors from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) as livelihood support for those living in the disputed island.
The ceremonial turnover of the fishing gear and shallow water payaos took place in Puerto Princesa City in Palawan.
The beneficiaries included the Kalayaan Fisherfolk Organization, and the Spratly’s Strong and Brave Women’s Association (SSBWA).
Each group received 10 38-footer fiberglass boats, which were constructed in BFAR’s boat building site in Rizal town, Palawan.
BFAR will deliver the boats to the Kalayaan Islands with the help of the Philippine Navy.
The fiberglass boats will enable the fishermen in the Kalayaan Islands to catch more fish compared to their hook and line fishing method.
BFAR also brought rainwater collector, which will supply the island communities with fresh water.
