An Australian Senator has resigned from parliament after a series of damaging links to a high-profile Chinese billionaire were revealed.
Sam Dastyari, a Labor member, had already been removed from two senior parliamentary positions, following revelations that he had accepted payment for travel and legal expenses from Chinese donors.
He has since become embroiled in a fresh string of scandals involving his relationship with Chinese donors.
In late November, he was accused of being disloyal to Australia by publically backing Beijing’s position on the South China Sea, which is at odds with Australia’s diplomatic view, at a Chinese-only press conference.
The Guardian reports that Dastyari had also “warned the Chinese Communist party-linked political donor Huang Xiangmo last year that his phone was probably tapped by government agencies, including the US government”.
Dastyari also “attempted to pressure deputy opposition leader Tanya Plibersek to abandon a meeting with a pro-democracy activist opposed to Beijing's interference in Hong Kong”, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
