Congressman Roilo Golez is one of the anti-mining members of the House of Representatives.
In yesterday's hearing of the Committee on Natural Resources, he questioned the Director of the Mining and Geosciences Bureau on the negative aspects of mining like:
1. Marcoppper releasing 200 million tons of toxic waste over a twenty year period or 10 million tons per year.
2. The abandoned mines now generating tons of toxic acidic waste.
3. The use of large amounts of water for mining, milling and cleaning operations to the detriment of other water users.
4. It takes three tons of ore to produce one gold ring.
5. Violations committed against indigenous peoples who are hardly protected by the government.6. Non payment of taxes to local governments.
7. That there is no mining town that has really prospered and that some towns even become ghost towns after the mine closes.
