7-year-old Pinoy chess whiz featured on Wall Street Journal

MANILA, Philippines – Seven-year-old genius Alekhine Nouri, the youngest Filipino chess player to nab a FIDE Master (FM) title, has been featured by Wall Street Journal Southeast Asia.
In a blog by Wall Street Journal's Cris Larano, Nouri talked about his dreams of becoming a super grandmaster.
He also wants to play against another gifted youngster who also set a record in the world of chess.
“I’d like to play Sergey Karjakin,” the Filipino chess wizard said of Karjakin, the world’s youngest child to secure grandmaster title at 12 years and seven months old.
“I want to be a super [Grandmaster],” he added.
The 7-year-old won an outright FM title by virtue of his excellent showing at the recent 14th ASEAN + Age Group Chess Championships 2013 Standard competition.
His father, Hamed Nouri, named him after of Alexander Alekhine, one of the best ever to play the sport.
Hamed hopes his son will get more exposure to improve his play.
“We need international exposure so that [Alekhine] could earn International Master norm by the time he is 9 or 10…. He needs more open tournaments,” said the elder Nouri.
Nouri said he loves playing chess because its pieces are similar to the characters he watches on TV.
“They’re like cartoons,” he said of chess pieces.
